Dog dandruff is a pressing problem that most dog owners and dog care givers face on a regular basis.

For dogs dandruff is uncomfortable, itchy and will cause flakes into the dog’s eyes. Moreover it will leave its residue over all the beautiful furniture and on your clothes when you are pampering your beloved pet.

However the presence of dandruff is an indication of low health and vitamin deficiency.

There are many remedies available for dog dandruff like shampoos, coat conditioners, supplements, itch reducers and fortified dog foods. Any product that will help to retain the moisture content on the dogs coat and skin will help a lot.

Among the products approved by vets the oatmeal shampoos are popular and can be used as a basic staple food which is readily available. Oatmeal helps to retain the natural oils more as opposed to shampoos. Thus bathing the dogs more often with oatmeal shampoos will prove beneficial.

If the itching is taken care of then the dog skin will get a chance to heal by itself and it will start to replenish the natural oils naturally. Itching can be reduced by adding iodine containing medicines to the bathing water for dogs.

Another method to reduce the itching is to add human anti-dandruff shampoo to the oatmeal shampoos. Still you should provide additional oil producing agents till the dandruff is completely eliminated. Regular bathing of the dog with the above is very effective in dandruff control.

An excellent way to increase the production of natural oils on dogs skin add salmon oil to the dog food. Daily supplementation with salmon oil will improve the coat luster, and also help to reduce any breathing allergies that the dog may have. Salmon has antihistamine effect that will improve the health and texture of the skin and fur of the dog.

With the above easy and cost effective methods, dog dandruff can be controlled to a reasonable extend. It will bring peace of mind to the pet owners and a happy life to the dogs. A lot of money can be thus saved because of the less number of vet visits for the dandruff problem.

Dandruff is just dried up, undernourished dead skin cells, which fall of in the shape of flakes from the scalp (in case of humans) or all over the body in case of pets such as dogs.

Our typical home remedy would include the following prevention tips:

Ensure that you dog has a balanced Fluid intake of good clean Water, preferably fresh water at every feed, and not water that has been lying around for hours or probably days together.

Though Local Ambient humidity would not be in our control, you could keep a watch on it to help in diagnosing if that is the only cause.

Ensure your Pet has a balanced diet, which includes basic Fats, and oil. Avoid feeding dry Food that lacks oil/Fat. What is seen outside is actually lacking inside.

Make sure you give your Precious doggy a super duper bath, with skin nourishing Dog shampoos, which contain natural ingredients. Do remember to rinse the dog thoroughly as remnants of the shampoo also can cause itching and rash. Small doses of Cooking oil/ Good Body oils brushed frequently, especially in Winter when there is lack of humidity, will work wonders and also balance the oil/fat level in the skin.

Lack of Hygiene: Keep the surroundings and the Doghouse/Dogs resting Place clean and tidy. Allowing the Dog to dry out itself naturally after a good toweling if necessary is important. Brush up the hair after during and use a good Dog powder to keep the skin Free of Flees.

Regular Brushing of the Fur and body along with a good body massage with a Home made mix of Lemon Juice with Vinegar (Yes it may keep the dog smelling for some time, but this works wonders!) will get rid of all that itchy dandruff for sure. After a good rub, you could wash him off with a good anti-dandruff shampoo and dust him with a good powder to keep him smelling good.

A balanced diet, which contains the right amount of Fats, Oily components, Calcium, and Vitamins, is a must. Vitamin “C” is mainly responsible for all skin Ailments. Good Quality Dog feed along with Home cooked Meat/ Supplementary food, gives a balanced diet for the dog.

Last but not least, give your previous one good company. What is commonly called as “Walking Dandruff” is caused by contact with other affected pets, so keep a watch for the those contagious ones. Better still walk your Dog personally, and you will have half your problems vanish.

To summarize I would only say:

good grooming

good hygiene

a great nourishing Wash

clean and healthy staying area

great balanced diet

good company

And not to forget the “Line & Vinegar” Bath if he does get one badly is just enough to keep the dandruff away.

I adore my dog! You think of those slightly strange people who have Labrador Retriever pillows in their houses, Labrador Retriever stickers on their cars, an Labrador Retriever shirts on their children, that’s me! You can laugh all you want, but I absolutely adore my pooches.

It takes a special heart to love animals like I do, and I wouldn’t trade it in for a second. So now that you have a bit of a back story on me, the dog lover, I’ll go into one of the things that I happen to know about best: how to reduce the amount of dog dandruff on my dogs. If anything I’ll admit, it’s the one thing about my dogs that I can’t stand! And that’s just a secret between you and me.

Labrador Retrievers are notorious shedders. My youngest dog Becky gets off the couch after a long nap and yup, the coach is covered in fur. The fur itself isn’t the main problem here, but all the dandruff that goes along with it. All my children moved out of the house a long time ago, and afterwards is when my love of labs really kicked in. But the problem is, my youngest daughter Patricia has a slight allergy to dog dandruff. So that’s a real problem whenever she and her family come to visit home. The last thing that I want is for my Patricia to have a less than amazing time when she finally comes to visit home because of dog dandruff on the furniture.

The best dog dandruff treatments that I know begins by treating both your dog and the furniture that it likes to rest on. Give the furniture a complete and thorough vacuuming from top to bottom, and then spray it with a light odor and dirt removing spray. It can be easily bought from any supermarket. Then it’s on to your dog. First off, give your dog a good bath from head to toe. Here, I would suggest going to your local pet store and purchasing a dandruff eliminating shampoo. And then the trick is afterwards to follow up the bath with a lotion treatment especially for dogs. This you can also find at a local pet store. This is the trick to soften and soothe your dog’s skin, which will definitely help to reduce dog dandruff.

While basic grooming is the main key to cleanliness, sometimes it is not enough: especially for dogs.

Like humans, dogs can get shafted in the hygiene department even with the best grooming policies.

Dog dandruff is an annoyance some pet owners cannot seem to dismiss, no matter how extensive or expensive the treatment turns out to be.

Thankfully, there is a simple (and inexpensive) natural dog dandruff remedy:

a simple combination lemon juice mixed with vinegar. It’s true, vinegar dogs are not the best smelling dogs in the world, but thankfully, if the mixture is allowed to set in for only 5 minutes, you can wash your dog with the best smelling shampoo while still fighting that pesky dandruff and removing the pungent smell of vinegar.

The execution is fairly simple and not very time consuming. Get your dog wet, then get your lemon juice and vinegar mixture ready. The amount needed is dependent on the size of the dog, so guess according to your pet size. In this case, less is not always more, so make sure you have enough to cover the entire dog’s hairy body.

Simply deep rub the mixture into your dog’s hair and let it set in for 5 minutes. Beware of the smell! Make sure to keep the dog isolated in the washing vessel being used so the mixture isn’t spread throughout.

After 5 minutes, rinse the mixture out and let it set for 2 more minutes. After the two minutes, feel free to re-wash the dog with any flowery-scented shampoo you like. Let the dog naturally dry, preferably outdoors, and all your dog dandruff problems were just mixed away!

Your dog will be happy and carefree without dandruff there to cause problems, simply because of an inexpensive home remedy. Sadly, it has not been tested on human hair as of yet, so experiment on your own hair at your own risk.
